Four Things to Do Before Sealing Your Pavers

Updated: Dec 12, 2018

If you have pavers at your house, one of the things that you want to do is to seal your pavers. But before you can seal them, there are things that you should do to make sure that you get the best possible result. Below are four tips that you can use to help you sell your pavers the right way and to have them look the best that they can look.

Check Out the Manufacturer Recommendations

Before you go to your hardware store, take some time to review the specifications from the manufacturer for sealing your pavers. This is going to give you some important insight about the kinds of products for sealing that will be safe to use on the pavers as well as how long you should wait before you apply the sealer to your new pavers.

Check Out the Weather

For the most part, sealers should only be used on the pavers that are totally dry. So you should confirm that there isn’t going to be any rain in your forecast for at least 24 hours before you start your project. It’s also important not to perform the sealing job during very extreme temperatures. A temperature of 60 to 80 degrees usually is ideal. It’s also important that the pavers aren’t getting rained on for 24 hours once you have put the sealer on.

Clean Your Pavers

This is one of the biggest things that you need to do when you’re sealing your pavers. This doesn’t just mean cleaning the stains from the pavers before you seal them. You’ll also want to make sure you’re taken care of any type of efflorescence. This step for cleaning will prep your pavers and allow the sealer to properly bond to them.

Remove Any Sand That is Contaminated

If you’re sealing your pavers, you want to make sure that you aren’t taking shortcuts. Make sure that you’re removing any type of contaminated sand you found in the joints and you’re replacing it using polymeric sand. One thing to note is if you are going to replace your sand, you should do your efflorescence cleaning after the sand’s been replaced and before you’re starting to seal.

These are the four things that you want to remember that you should do before you seal your pavers. These tips will help you with saving time and money and avoiding making costly mistakes.
